Learning with Kami! (Tool Time 3)

Kami is a Chrome extension that allows educators and students to annotate! There are many different tools one can use to annotate, such as highlight, add comments, draw, add shapes, etc. Educators can upload a variety of files (PDF, Google slides, articles from a newspaper, images, etc) for the students to annotate. It is a great way to help students interact with text or documents in a meaningful way and think beyond the worksheet!

Even though Kami has a lot of great features, it is important to be mindful of some pitfalls:

  • paid vs free tools

  • not all features work on an iPad or tablet

  • learning curve

Check out my evaluation for more specifics and a real live example!

Hi, Caroline. Thanks for sharing your review of Kami.

Reflect – I learned that Kami is a chrome extension that allows you to annotate different files in a variety of ways (from highlighting to text/voice comments and drawing). You demonstrated how you would use the features of Kami to help ELL students understand the text, “New Quarters to Honor Women.” You also mentioned that the limitations included the learning curve for students and how the same features aren’t available on different devices (i.e., laptop vs. tablet).

Inquire – Can the audio comments also be transcribed as text? You mentioned that you wanted to use this to teach ELL students, but I wonder how many of them would have difficulty with…

Hi Caroline

Thanks for doing your TT3 on Kami, I've been curious about this tool for a little while!

R: I learned just how easy Kami is to used and how many features it has! I always pictured it more of an annotating tool than a tool that could do audio/video links and add ons

I: I do wish that this was more accessible through tablets and such. I know many students like to work on phones and tablets if they have them and this seems like a perfect tool for mobile tech because it is so focused on one page rather than a moving slideshow/website

S: Looking at your example I like that you have color-coded the text, however…

Caroline,

I enjoy reading about Kami.

Reflect - What did you learn?

This is the first time I've heard about Kami and will definitely look into it, since I'm using Google Chrome. It's the perfect tool for those who likes to add 'extra' notes onto existing documents.

Inquire - What do you want to know more about?

I noticed that you mentioned not all features on iPad or tablet, would you recommend this to others? Do you think this tool is an effective tool to promote student collaboration?

Suggest - What ideas or connections might improve the current iteration?

The only suggestion I have is to list the type of devices that are compatible with Kami.

Elevate - How can…
